Tyson Okello's Journey
Tyson Okello's Journey: Path to Empowerment Through HEDSO

In the sugarcane fields of Muhoroni, Tyson Okello, a former sugarcane cutter, reflects on his transformation from a part of the exploitation cycle to a champion for change, thanks to the HEDSO community. Born and raised in the Sugarbelt areas of Muhoroni, Tyson's journey was shaped by the harsh realities of gender-based violence and teenage pregnancies that plagued his community.

After completing Form Four in 2016, Tyson joined his friends as a sugarcane cutter. They had money, which fueled a dangerous culture of exploitation, often taking advantage of vulnerable girls. This reckless mindset continued until 2017, when Joseph Ojuki, the Director of HEDSO, visited their field. He spoke to them about financial literacy, responsibility, and the power to change their community. Tyson's outlook shifted, and he began attending HEDSO's weekly sessions, which helped him understand the importance of financial planning and his role in ending GBV and teenage pregnancy.

Tyson became a male champion, encouraging other sugarcane cutters to join HEDSO. Together, they started small projects, savings groups, and community initiatives. Tyson's involvement didn't stop when he joined university—he continued advocating for HEDSO, organizing events, and supporting orphanages. His passion for empowering young people and promoting gender equality grew stronger, and as HEDSO evolved into a fully registered NGO, Tyson's dedication earned him the role of Senior Programs Manager.

Today, Tyson continues to mobilize young men and boys, pushing for a vision of economic empowerment and gender equality in his community. His journey is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and community-driven initiatives. Tyson remains committed to creating sustainable opportunities for vulnerable communities, having been profoundly impacted by his experience with HEDSO.
